My very useful guide, detailing exactly how not to hang wallpaper!

So, let’s cut to it. What attitude traits should you park before starting your wallpaper project? Hopefully, by addressing these, I can encourage you to make sensible decisions when beginning your own wallpaper escapades!

Here are 10 attitude traits you should avoid:

  1. It’ll be fine. I don’t need to prep the wall first. I’ll be covering it anyway. We do not advise this at all. Preparation is key—clean the wall, fill the gaps with good quality filler, and let it dry. A smooth surface is crucial for the best application.

  2. I can do it on my own!!! Sure, you could tackle wallpapering solo, but why not double the fun with a buddy? Matching patterns and smoothing out wrinkles is much easier with an accomplice. Plus, it's way more fun with a sidekick cheering you on!

  3. I don’t need instructions. NOT TRUE. Read the instructions! Seriously, it’s a game-changer. They’ll be in the box, and if you really can’t see any, visit the shop’s website and search there. And don’t just skim them—read every word, and watch every available video before you start too. If you’ve got any questions, ask the shop owner or google it. Just make sure you find the answer.

  4. Don’t assume the wallpaper you adore on screen will be the exact same colour once purchased and in your living room. Trust me, I learned this the hard way. Always remember, screen colours can differ due to monitor differences. If in doubt, order a sample.

  5. We painted the walls Saturday, let’s get the wallpaper up Sunday. Absolutely not. Patience always pays off. I know, I know it’s tempting, but applying too soon can lead to wallpaper peeling away. We advise waiting at least three weeks before applying paper to freshly painted walls.

  6. Who cares if it’s a bit uneven? You will. Invest in a plumb line, spirit level, or really treat yourself and order a laser level—it’s a lifesaver. Or just borrow one! I bet if you haven’t got one, your in-laws do, or Steve next door. Remember: getting it straight to begin with is everything. And while I’m talking straight lines, buy a new knife. Don’t use the one you inherited from your uni mate’s dad 20 years ago.

  7. I won’t break my neck. Safety is everything! Embrace the ladder! Let’s not be the one balancing on the swivelled office chair.

  8. Let’s just go for it and cut. No, no, no. Always measure twice, cut once. And for the love of wallpaper, double-check those pattern repeats! Trust me, it’s a pain to realise you’ve come up short, and not to mention expensive.

  9. I can do this in the hour after lunch and before I do the school run. Keep the excitement in check. Remember, it's paper—you need time. Rushing can end with creases, bubbles, rips, and a lot of tears! Avoid heartache and extra expenses by handling with care.

  10. I’m done, tidying up can wait until tomorrow. Naaaah, it’s best to take time to clean up any excess paste or stray wallpaper bits straight away. Like leaving dirty dishes until the next morning, the clean-up is always much worse. Just get it done and thank me later.
